The BNRBIA gets on board with many of the programs that the City of Burnaby has organized, to keep the area looking its best.
BNRBIA is working with the City of Burnaby to keep public sidewalks and streets litter free. We are looking into putting together a ‘clean team’ in the future who would keep the area tidy.
BNRBIA is working to keep North Road graffiti free. Graffiti vandals are frequently criminals who leave their tag or mark as a calling card. Tags and graffiti are a source of pride for these people. Leaving graffiti on your property is unfortunately going to earn you, the innocent victim, a by-law infraction and a fine. Graffiti makes an area look run down and sends a message to criminals that the area is not being maintained or watched. Of course, this invites trouble! If you see graffiti on your property, please paint over it right away. Covering it up promptly will communicate that graffiti will not be tolerated. Hate graffiti must be removed within 48 hours and regular graffiti within 14 days.
The City of Burnaby has statistics which show that when a mural is painted over a frequently targeted graffiti spot, vandals will leave it alone. They have dedicated funds to a City wide mural program, which covers 50% of the costs of installing a mural. The BIA has artists available that can work on projects that reflect ‘Community”. Call the BIA office if you see an opportunity to create a mural in the area, or a place that is frequently tagged by graffiti artists and we will get busy!
